Appeals board's vote on rubble landfill is delayed

A hearing at which the Board of Appeals was expected to make a decision on a rubble landfill near Crofton was postponed last night, after the board's attorney became trapped by the weekend storm.

While the board did meet on other issues, such as a discussion of the Critical Areas law, an attorney was required for the meeting involving The Halle Co. Chesapeake Terrace project.

Board attorney P. Tyson Bennett was stuck in Florida.

The Silver Spring-based Halle Co. wants to put the landfill on 150 acres of a 480-acre parcel off Conway Road near Route 3. The company also wants permission to operate a sand and gravel operation on 35 acres.

The project is opposed by many community groups, including Crofton, and the county.

Concerns about the anticipated 300 trucks that will go through ++ the intersection prompted an administrative hearing officer to rule against the company in March 1991.

At the last appeals board hearing, members were trying to reach agreement on what kind of restrictions they could place against the company, should they grant approval.

No new date has been set for the hearing.

West County GOP club to elect officers

The West County Republican Club will hold a dinner meeting at the Fort Meade Officers' Club at 6:30 p.m., March 30. There will be a social period followed by a beef and Burgundy dinner.

An election of officers and directors will be held. A slate of candidates will be presented by the nominating committee. Nominations also will be accepted from the floor.

The cost per person is $15. Reservations are required and must be made by March 26.
