RADFORD, Va. -- This time, Towson State's women's basketball team didn't need a last-second shot to beat UMBC.

Twelve days after nipping the Retrievers on Shannon Ward's buzzer-beater, Towson State steamrolled UMBC, 70-55, in yesterday's quarterfinals of the Big South Conference tournament in Radford University's Dedmon Center.

The win was the fifth in a row for fourth-seeded Towson State (12-15), which plays UNC-Greensboro in a semifinal today at 6 p.m. UNC-Greensboro beat Charleston Southern, 58-55.

"The team is on a mission, no doubt about it," said Towson State coach Ellen Fitzkee, whose team began the season 0-7.

"We started the season 0-7, and we want to end it 7-0," said Fitzkee. "We're 5-0 now."

Danielle Barry scored 15 points to lead a quartet of Tigers in double figures. Megan Gebbia scored 14, Joann Allen had 13, and Caprice Hightower added 12.

"When we were 0-7, a lot of people were concerned with their individual play," said Barry, an all-conference forward who also had 14 rebounds. "Now, people realize we play the game as a team. That's why we're so balanced."

Towson State had led 32-19 at the half, and in the second half, Barry scored the first six points of a 9-0 run that helped the Tigers build a 50-32 lead with 11:20 to play.

Towson State led by as many as 21 points and never fewer than 11 in the game's final 14 minutes.

UMBC (11-16), the tournament's fifth seed, shot 28.6 percent from the field. All-Conference guard Missy Quille, one of four Retrievers trying to shake the flu, made just one of her first 10 shots before finishing with 17 points on 6-for-22 shooting.

"What a time to go cold," said UMBC head coach Sue Furnary. "Missy was probably feeling fuzzy [from her illness]. She looked fuzzy. She wasn't sharp at all."

F: Eunice French led UMBC with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
