Anti-smoking proposal gains support

The Greater Severna Park Council this week voted to support an anti-smoking bill introduced by Republican Councilwoman Diane Evans.

The Anne Arundel County Council is scheduled to vote on the bill Monday. It would ban smoking in county buildings, banks, health-care facilities, museums, lecture halls and the commons areas of shopping malls.

The bill exempts restaurants, hotels and other private businesses from any legal restrictions, permitting businesses to decide what smoking restrictions they will impose.

The Greater Severna Park Council membership has debated in recent months whether it is appropriate for them to take positions on issues of public morality. Representatives of the business community objected last month when the GSPC voted to generally endorse the concept of anti-smoking legislation.

However, the council took a position on the issue of smoking and cancer when it established a Cancer Task Force last year, members said.
