Planning board mulls gas station-tourism center

The Mount Airy Planning and Zoning Commission will consider a special exception tonight that would allow a gas station and tourism center off Route 27.

Ewing Oil Co. has proposed building a gas station -- which also would serve as a tourism center for Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Montgomery counties through a public-private venture -- on the proposed extension of East Ridgeville Boulevard off Route 27.

A special exception is needed because gas stations are not allowed in commercial zones.

The board deadlocked on the request last year. Some members voted against granting the special exception then because the State Highway Administration had not approved the extension of East Ridgeville Boulevard. The highway administration has since approved the plan.

Town officials sought the private-public venture to promote tourism in the southwest part of the county. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall, 2 Park Ave.
