Toby Kershner scored three goals to help the Howard County Heat under-14 boys indoor soccer team to a 4-4 tie with the Doug Griffith Soccer Club last Friday at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. Nick Finkelsen added a goal for the Heat (0-0-1).
* Girls: Despite two goals from Natalie Klisas, Team 1 dropped a 6-5 decision to Team 4 Sunday in the Howard County Recreation and Parks Youth Indoor Soccer, Girls Grade 3-5 League at Atholton High School.
Sisters Kirsten and Lindsay Viser combined to score the other three goals for Team 1, which fell to 1-1-3.
The Howard County Squirt B1 Huskies completed an undefeated season in the Wales Division of the Capitol Beltway Hockey League with a 2-1 win over Chevy Chase last weekend.
The Huskies improved to 13-0-2 in the league and 16-2-5 overall.
Matt Collin put Howard on the scoreboard 38 seconds into the final period with a goal off a pass from Ryan Fenton. The Huskies then took a 2-0 lead later in the period on a goal from Kyle Chacon, assisted by Drew Zinchiak and Keith Milli.
Chevy Chase's Thomas Streeter scored his team's only goal with less than a minute left.
The Huskies' defense, anchored by goalie Lenny Bernard, held its opponent to two goals or less for the 21st time in 23 games.
8-9 girls: The Ninja Terrapins of the Columbia Basketball Association finished the regular season undefeated after a 77-21 win over the Blue Bombers Saturday.
Sarah Costa scored 22 points and Rashida Walcott added 16 to lead eight Terrapins scorers.
* Major girls: The Duke Blue Devils of the Howard County Youth Program proved that their regular-season league championship was no fluke, defeating Maryland, 40-31, last weekend in the tournament title game.
After Julie Beckman scored 10 in the first quarter to put the Terps ahead 12-4, Duke's Kyle Rutkowski and Caitlin Ryland combined for 10 in the second quarter to give the Blue Devils a 20-18 lead at the break.
Duke, which had an average height advantage of 2 inches, pulled away in the second half as its frontcourt players keyed a 20-13 run for the final margin.
The Blue Devils' Betty Bosley led all scorers with 16. Beckman led the Terps with 15.
In other games last week, Duke defeated LSU, 29-9; Maryland beat Miami, 31-27, and LSU edged Miami, 27-21.
* Minor girls: Jill Seewagon and Kelby Vanous scored key baskets down the stretch to lead UCLA to a 24-22 win over Maryland last week in the Howard County Youth Program.
Maryland remained in striking distance the entire way thanks to the scoring of Julia Papania and Rebecca Frederick.
In other games, Duke beat Maryland, 17-12; LSU edged UCLA, 9-8; Miami defeated LSU, 28-19; Notre Dame held off Duke, 22-16; Georgia Tech defeated Boston College, 23-14; and N.C. State squeaked by Villanova, 20-19.
* Major boys: Every player on the Boston College roster scored, as the Eagles took it to Georgetown, 78-25, last week in Howard County Youth Program action.
Boston College also defeated Duke, 42-40.
* Adult: The playoffs are off and running in the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks adult basketball leagues.
Both the Skins and Celtics-Not advanced to the Sunday Division I quarterfinals with wins over the weekend at Centennial High School. The Skins scored a 63-47 victory over Bode Floors, and Celtics-Not defeated Clyde's, 70-62.

In Sunday Division II first-round action, MAI Legends won its play-in before losing to K.A.O.S., 53-33; the Baby Brigade beat Wine, 66-44; the Lakers edged Baltimore Aircoil, 61-60; Mutha's beat Baxter, 52-37; the Industrial Wastes held off the Irish Pizza Pub, 53-50; the Untouchables defeated Bricks-R-Us, 50-41; Milt's beat Fitness Formula, 57-38; and Pete's Raider won its play-in before losing to the Dream On Team, 59-54.
In this Sunday's quarterfinals at Mount Hebron High, K.A.O.S. will meet the Baby Brigade at 9, the Lakers will play Mutha's at 10, the Industrial Wastes will take on the Untouchables at 11 and Milt's will meet the Dream On Team at noon.
After four games last Wednesday, the Wednesday Division C league will play its semifinal round tomorrow night at Dunloggin Middle.
Last week, the Razorbacks defeated the Hornets, 82-38; Jilly's ran past the Fast Breaks, 61-56; the Terps edged Moyer's Sports Corner, 61-55, and Short But Slow beat the Single Strand Knicks, 63-38.
The Razorback's will meet Jilly's and the Terps will take on Short But Slow in tomorrow's semifinals.
Gymnasts from the Top Flight Gymnastics Club of Columbia sharpened their 1kills at a meet last weekend at Watkins Gymnastics in West Chester, Pa.
Concentrating on some of their more difficult maneuvers in preparation for the state meet, several competitors came away with high marks.
