North Carolina knocks Syracuse off the top again

Fans of the Syracuse Orangemen may have experienced deja vu after the preseason favorite's opening-day 14-10 loss to North Carolina on Saturday.

It was not the first time that a Tar Heels team had knocked off a No. 1 Syracuse team in the season opener.

In the 1987 preseason men's basketball poll, the Orangemen were ranked first but fell to North Carolina, 96-93, in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic in Springfield, Mass.

That year, Syracuse was coming off a one-point loss to Indiana in the NCAA tournament final.

The Orangemen lacrosse team ended last season with a one-goal loss to Princeton in the final game of the NCAA tournament.

Syracuse and North Carolina each have won four lacrosse national championships, but have never met in the championship game.

Army advancing

Army, which did not receive a vote in The Baltimore Sun's preseason top 10, enters this week's poll at No. 9 after an 18-5 rout of Cornell.
