Nominations sought for Penney awards

This will be the 10th year the J. C. Penney Golden Rule Volunteer Awards will be presented to groups and individuals for the volunteer work they perform.

Grants of $1,000 each will be presented to seven winners for use by the nonprofit organizations.In addition, the winners will receive a sculpture that symbolizes the spirit of volunteerism. Ten finalists will receive $250 grants for their organization and a certificate of recognition.

The deadline for nonprofit organizations in central Maryland to .. submit nominations is Friday. Nomination forms can be obtained at the catalog desks of J. C. Penney stores or by calling 410-298-8100. The awards will be presented April 21.

Recycling offered for phone books

The Anne Arundel County Department of Utilities and Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Maryland are offering telephone book recycling through April 2 at drop-off locations at shopping centers, county hotels and elementary schools.

Phone books may be dropped off at the swimming pool parking lot, Primrose Road, Truxton Park, Annapolis, 24 hours a day through March 31.

Tuesday through Saturday, telephone books may be dropped off at the commissary parking lot, Rose Road, Fort Meade, on a 24-hour basis. On Saturday, the Cape St. Claire Fire Department, 1373 Cape St. Claire Road, Annapolis, will take the books from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
