Eastern Vocational Tech basketball coach Joel Bailey set a bold team goal yesterday.

Prior to the Mavericks' Class 3A, Region II semifinal playoff game, Bailey intended for his team to shut down No. 14 Catonsville's star senior forwards James Lewis and Printice McNair.

But how serious was he? The duo, coming off back-to-back 54- and 46-point combination performances, scored 40 in the Comets' 81-56 rout, their third win this season over the Baltimore County rival.

Tomorrow at 7, two-time defending state champion Catonsville (18-5) will host Aberdeen in the regional championship, a rematch of last season's region title game.

McNair scored 22 points and Lewis had 18, as Catonsville led from start to finish. Much of the Comets' 54-34 rebounding domination resulted in quick transition points off Lewis' outlet passes.

Catonsville senior forward Mike Barrett contributed 15 points, and Wardel Selby's 15 was high for EVT (10-14), which converted just 22 of 69 field-goal attempts.

"It didn't work," Bailey said of his strategy. "We didn't play well and they played tough inside, very physical. We didn't get back well and they scored a lot off transition."

"Our game is 32 minutes of pressure and try to get a lot of points off transition," Catonsville coach Art Gamzon said. "That's typical."
