Marriage fee rises $10

March 04, 1993

The Carroll commissioners increased yesterday the marriage license fee to $35 from $25 to help fund the county's Domestic Violence Program.

Steven D. Powell, director of the county's Management and Budget Department, said $10 of the license fee covers county and clerk of court costs. The remainder, he said, is a revenue source for the Domestic Violence Program.

The $10 boost will raise an additional $12,000 for the program, which provides counseling and other services to families battered by domestic violence. The additional money, he said, will allow the hiring of a part-time employee to provide transportation for some clients and to assist more women and children.

About 50 percent of the program's $34,000 budget for fiscal 1993 came from marriage license revenues, he said.

The county issues about 1,200 marriage licenses a year, Mr. Powell said.
