Card shop, postal branch robbed

The Carrolltowne Card and Gift Shop, which also housed a small branch office of the U.S. Postal Service, was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money Tuesday night.

State police said someone entered the card shop -- inside Carrolltowne Mall, which has security officers on the premises until about midnight -- and took money from the card shop and a small safe containing post office money and a large quantity of stamps.

U.S. postal inspectors and the FBI are also investigating the burglary.

Officials said the burglary at the Eldersburg shopping center was discovered when an employee opened the shop at 9 a.m. yesterday and found the safe and money missing.

Police found no sign of forced entry. Investigators said someone might have hidden inside the shop before the closing at 9 p.m. Tuesday or might have entered by using a duplicate key.

Officials said the shop was not ransacked, indicating the intruder knew where the cash and stamps were kept.

Investigators at the scene said they believed the burglar left through the rear door, which also needed a key to be opened from the inside.

State police said the investigation was continuing.
