Registration at college hits record high

More students than ever will be attending Anne Arundel Community College this spring.

College records show 11,732 students have signed up for classes -- a record for spring registration, and a 9 percent increase over registration for spring 1992.

The previous enrollment record was set in 1991, when 11,225 students registered for the spring semester.

"Part of the reason enrollment is up is that we reinstated our two-week session in January and we started taking registration in shopping malls again," said Debbie Shaughney, a community college spokeswoman.

Minority recruitment also was up -- by 24 percent, with 1,020 black students registered for classes.

Students also signed up for more evening and part-time classes. Enrollment for evening classes rose 12 percent, and sign-ups for part-time classes rose by 10 percent compared with last year.
