Environmental protection begins in the back yard

A handbook outlining how residents can protect the environment in their own back yards has been published by the Severn River Association (SRA).

The 20-page glossy publication, "The Watershed Conservationist," includes tips on reducing air, water and land pollution. It also has pictures from the 70-square-mile watershed by photographer Marion Warren and a history of the river.

The book, paid for with a $4,100 grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, is the successor to the group's 3-year-old "Backyard Conservationist Notebook." The SRA has published 18,000 copies of the new book, which are available through the 106 neighborhood associations it represents.

Individuals also can receive a copy when they join the SRA by sending their $12 annual dues to P.O. Box 146, Annapolis, 21404.
