TIMOTHY I. MILLER, 17, son of Thomas and Suzanne Miller of Spring Hill Drive in Carroll Highlands, Eldersburg.
School: Senior at Liberty High School.
Honored for: Selection as one of 1,780 semifinalists nationwide in the 1993 Coca-Cola Scholars program. Semifinalists are chosen for their balance of leadership, character and achievement in their schools and communities.
Timothy must now submit additional materials, such as recommendation letters and essays, to compete for the 50 national scholarships of $20,000 each and the 100 regional scholarships of $4,000 each.
Goals: Timothy will attend Elizabeth College in Elizabethtown, Pa., to major in communications, with an emphasis on stage and screen production. Tuition there is about $18,000 a year, so he has been trying to get as many scholarships as he can, he said.
Comments: This scholarship program has required a lot more work on Timothy's part than others he has applied for, he said.
"I'm willing to put forth the effort for any of them," he said, but the Coca-Cola program is more time-consuming.
"If it were just sitting there writing letters, it would be easy. The thing that makes it tough is, millions of other students are doing the same thing, and I'm competing with all of them. In the United States, there's at least that many of us trying to get money for college."
