Parting shots

Ouch! The fashion world was ready for change, but not quite prepared for altered states. Even the best designers allowed mutant strains to slip into their collections at the New York spring shows. They broke the old rules in an effort to wake up the fashion press and buyers who have been snoring along with the prevailing classics for too many seasons. Even the models, gorgeous when they are at their worst, had to suffer along: At some of the shows the latest looks in locks made the poor dears collectively seem to be having a bad hair day. Change can be scary.
