Snow blankets entire schedule Wrestling regions reset for today HIGH SCHOOLS

Yesterday's snow caused the closing of schools throughout the Baltimore area, wiping out all of yesterday's high school athletic schedule.

Five state wrestling regional tournaments involving teams from the Baltimore area, originally set for yesterday and today, will be held all day today.

If today's wrestling events are postponed, Ron Belinko, the state wrestling chairman, said Monday and Tuesday are viable dates for rescheduling.

To "allow [regional] tournament directors flexibility," Belinko has moved the state tournament seeding meetings -- previously scheduled for tomorrow -- to Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Owings Mills. The state tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at Western Maryland College.

Here is today's schedule for each of the regionals involving area teams:

* Class 2A-1A, Region III at Hammond -- weigh-ins, 8 to 9 a.m.; opening rounds and quarterfinals, 9:30 a.m.; consolation quarterfinals, noon; championship semifinals, 2 p.m.; consolation semifinal round, 4 p.m.; consolation finals, 6 p.m.; championship finals, 7 p.m.

* Class 4A-3A, Region I at Randallstown -- weigh-ins, 9 to 11 a.m., with wrestling to follow at 11:30 a.m.; completion of quarterfinals expected by 2 p.m.; 30-minute break to follow the quarterfinals, then the championship semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and consolation semifinals; after another 30-minute break, at approximately 6:30 p.m., wrestlers will go for fifth and sixth place, followed by the consolation championships (third and fourth); finals estimated to begin at 8:15 p.m.

* Class 4A-3A, Region IV at Meade -- weigh-ins, 8 to 9:30 a.m.; quarterfinals, 10:15 a.m.; quarterfinal losers, 12:15 p.m.; championship semifinals, 1:30 p.m.; consolation semifinals, 2:30 p.m.; fifth- and sixth-place matches 3:30 p.m.; consolation championships, 4:30 p.m.; finals tentatively 5:30 or 6 p.m.

* Class 2A-1A Region II at Fallston -- weigh-ins, 8 to 9:30 a.m.; quarterfinals, 11 a.m.; championship semifinals, noon; quarterfinal losers, 2 p.m.; semifinal losers brackets, 3:30; fifth- and sixth-place wrestlers, 4:30 p.m.; consolation finals, 5:30 p.m.; finals, 7 p.m.

* Class 2A-1A Region I at Boonsboro -- will be similar to the tournament at Fallston with weigh-ins between 9 and 10 a.m., finals between 6 and 6:30 p.m.

Several basketball games were also postponed yesterday. Here is a look at each county's plans for makeups:

Anne Arundel County

Old Mill's boys basketball team is hoping the weather cooperates today to keep its playoff hopes alive.

To defend their Class 4A Region IV title, the Patriots (11-8) have to play and defeat host Chesapeake (7-14) at 1 p.m.

The Old Mill at Chesapeake contest is one of five rescheduled boys and girls doubleheaders set for today and is clearly the most important. If the weather prevents the schools from playing again, Old Mill is out of the playoffs, which are scheduled to start Monday.

If the Patriots play and lose, they are also out and Edmondson is in.

Six teams qualify in each region, and Old Mill, although ahead of Edmondson in total playoff points (81-75), trails by point average (total number of games divided into total points accumulated). Edmondson completed a 17-game season with a 4.41 average.

Old Mill's average over 19 games is 4.26, but with a win at Chesapeake, the Patriots' average would go to 4.45 and give them the sixth and final seed. The Patriots have won five of the past six games.

The rest of today's makeup schedule is as follows: Boys -- Queen Anne's at South River, noon; Southern at Northeast, 1 p.m.; Annapolis at Severna Park, 1 p.m.; Broadneck at Arundel, 7.30 p.m. Girls -- Queen Anne's at South River, 10 a.m.; Southern at Northeast, 11 a.m.; Old Mill at Chesapeake, 11 a.m.; Annapolis at Severna Park, 3 p.m.; Broadneck at Arundel, 5:30 p.m. Eight Baltimore County boys basketball season finales were called off. Only one of those games -- Kenwood at Catonsville today at 4 p.m. -- will be played.

"The principals at both schools [Kenwood and Catonsville] thought ahead enough to get chaperones and faculty members to work the game. But at this point, it's impossible for the other schools to put all that together," said Belinko, supervisor of physical education and athletics. "Other games, like Hereford-Patapsco and Dundalk-Perry Hall, were moved to Thursday because they heard the forecast and planned ahead."

There is no time to make up the other games because the regional playoffs begin Monday.

Only two basketball games were scheduled last night, both involving Westminster. The boys game, Quince Orchard at Westminster, will be played tonight at 7. The Westminster girls may travel to Quince Orchard today. A decision will be made this morning.

Westminster's boys can clinch a berth in next week's state Class 4A, Region I tournament with a victory today.

Westminster (13-8) could also gain a spot in the 4A regionals if either Magruder or Wootten loses its final game of the season this weekend.
