Forklift driver fatally injured in Jessup warehouse accident

A 36-year-old Baltimore forklift driver died yesterday after being pinned between his forklift and a shelving unit inside a warehouse at Pace Consolidation Center in Jessup, authorities said.

Michael Biedenkapp, of the 2100 block of Northland Road in Baltimore, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was flown by state police helicopter following the accident, authorities said.

Mr. Biedenkapp sustained severe internal injuries, said Battalion Chief Donald R. Howell, the county's fire and rescue services spokesman. The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at the company, in the 8200 block of Patuxent Range Road. No one else was injured.

Pace Consolidation officials declined to comment on the accident.

The accident is the first fatal industrial accident in the state this year, said Doug Wallis, supervisor for Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MOSHA). Last year, there were 30 fatal industrial accidents in Maryland.
