Perna trio excels in Level 9 event

Three youngsters from the Perna Gymnastics Club had big performances at last weekend's Level 9 Optional competition at the club.

The trio took the top three places in the vaulting event. Becky Fuhrman was first with an 8.60, Stephanie Rogers second with 8.57, and Jessica Groszkowski third with 8.40.

Rogers also was first on the uneven bars with 7.80 and Groszkowski third with 7.30.

Groszkowski was first on the balance beam with 8.25, Fuhrman second with 8.05 and Rogers third with 7.90. Groszkowski also was first on the floor exercises with 8.85 and Fuhrman second with 8.70.

In all-around, Groszkowski led with 32.80, Rogers was second with 32.35 and Fuhrman third with 31.90.

Also, five Perna gymnasts achieved all-around scores qualifying them for postseason regional championships, and two others qualified for state championships.

Regional qualifiers at the Optional level were Jessica Groszkowski, Jennifer Nowe, Shannon Wright, Jennifer Groszkowski and Melissa Denhardt. Kasey Thomas and Jamie Horness qualified for the Level 6 state championships.

* The Carroll Challengers' Heather McGee had an all-around score of 31.05 in a Towson Level 6 sectional meet to qualify for the state championships. She scored an 8.15 on vaulting, 5.80 on bars, 7.95 on beam and 9.15 (first) on floor.

Teammate Tammy Wilson scored 8.30 on vault, 8.80 (second) on bars, 6.90 on beam, 8.35 (fourth) on floor and 32.35 (fifth) all-around.

Four other Carroll Challengers youngsters competed in the Level 5 Harford Invitational last weekend.

Jamie Schlipper scored 5.65 on vault, 8.00 on bars, 7.00 on beam, 8.00 on floor and 28.50 all-around.

Nicole Smith was 5.90 on vault, 6.85 on bars, 7.45 on beam, 6.65 on floor and 26.85 all-around.

Jessica Federici scored 7.05 on vault, 6.65 on bars, 7.95 on beam, 7.70 on floor and 29.35 all-around.

Angie Zagami was 7.90 on vault, 9.10 on bars, 7.35 on beam, 7.40 on floor and 31.75 all-around, qualifying her for the state championships.

St. Joseph's basketball

* Prep Division -- Artie Burkendine scored 21 points to lead Blue to a 34-27 win over Green. Brad Johnson's 12 points led Green.

* First-place Gold won, 44-39, despite a game-high 23 points from Black's Tim Shifflet. Mike Nagel paced the winners with 13.

* Sean Jensen scored 19 points to lead Maroon over White, 50-40. Greg Wentz's 12 points led White.

* Gold beat Green, 48-24. Ben Stoltenberg scored 17 points for Gold (10-0) and Alex Hafer added 10.

* Maroon upset second-place Black, 40-38, as Jensen paced the winners with 15 points and Jim Smutek added 14.

* Burkendine scored 22 points and Adam Sakers added 10 to lead Blue to a 55-31 win over White.

* Senior Division -- Joe Kafchinski scored 22 points and Jason Dunbar had 21 to lead Black to a 68-57 victory over Red, which was led by Paul Weinhardt's 28.

St. John's basketball

* Kindergarten-second grade Division -- The Lions stayed in first place by topping the Terrors, 18-6. Tim MacKenzie led the Lions (4-0-1) with six points, and Bryan Watkins had four for the Terrors.

* Andrew Eckenrode scored six points to lead his Panthers to a 14-7 victory over the Heat. Bryan Johnson scored four for the Heat.

* The Magic edged the Hornets, 13-12, as Bryant Graham paced the winners with seven points, and Matt Balsamo scored four for the Hornets.

* Billy Lennon scored six points as the Spurs beat the Owls, 10-4.

* Third-fourth grade Division -- The first-place Knicks (8-0) topped the Suns, 19-6, behind Brendon McDaniel's nine points.

* The Sonics edged the Pistons, 19-17. Ryan Burdner and Zach Gayhar each scored four points and Stephen Evans had a game-high seven for the Pistons.

* The Terps tripped the Nets, 18-10. The Terps' Steven Moore and Nets' Mike Noonan each scored four points to lead all scorers.

* Sean Parone scored nine points to lead the Jazz to a 25-16 win over the Celtics.

Sandymount basketball

* Grade 3-5 Division -- The Pistons topped the Celtics, 32-14, as Matt Parker led the winners with 10 points. Brock Myers paced the Celtics with six.

* Justin Dunn scored 11 points to lead the Lakers to a 22-9 win over the Hornets. Matthew Thompson scored four for the Hornets.

* The Jazz ripped the Bulls, 42-22. Josh Ches scored 10 points for the winners.

* Grade 6-8 Division -- The Bulls got past the Celtics, 39-36. Kelby Smith paced the winners with 12 points and Jay Pinner had a game-high 14 for the Celtics.

* Eric Taluck scored 21 points to lead the Hornets to a 51-46 victory over the Lakers.

* The Bullets defeated the Magic, 56-22. Todd Cheney and Mike Swain paced the winners (7-0) with 16 points apiece.


Eight members of the Carroll County YMCA team won ribbons at the Chesapeake and Potomac YMCA League championships.

Leslie Edwards (age 8-under girls) was third in the 25-yard breaststroke and 11th in the 25 freestyle. Whitney Palmer (9-10 girls) was ninth in the 50 butterfly. Melissa Linard (8-under girls) was 12th in the 25 breaststroke. Matt Farley (13-14 boys) was 11th in the 100 breaststroke.

Tina Douley, Ilisa Pyatt, Laura Seidel and Katie Townsley were sixth in the 15-18 girls 400 medley relay.

Palmer and Farley qualified at the meet for the YMCA's Southern District championships on March 6-7.
