A 25-year-old West Baltimore man was fatally shot last night in a courtyard at the Gilmor Homes, city police said.

Pronounced dead at the scene in the 1600 block of Bakbury Court from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head was Antonio Devon Carroll, of the 1600 block of W. Lanvale St.

Positive identification was made through papers found on the body and by a friend who came to the scene a short time later after he heard about the shooting.

Homicide detective Michael Crutchfield said Western District police officers responding to a report of a shooting about 9:10 p.m. found Mr. Carroll lying on his back a few feet from a wall between two apartment buildings.

The fully clothed victim was pronounced dead by the crew of a city ambulance and his body removed to the state medical examiner's office, where an attempt was to be made today to recover the bullet.

Detective Crutchfield said there were no apparent witnesses to the fatal shooting and no arrest had been made.

He said a motive for the slaying was unknown.
