2 police officers given awards for arrests in restaurant robbery

Two county police officers assigned to the special operations section have been cited for arresting three men in connection with the robbery of a Glen Burnie Burger King.

The men later were linked to 33 other armed robberies in the Baltimore area.

Officers Scott Gall and James Teare were staking out the fast-food restaurant Aug. 27 in the wake of a rash of armed robberies in the area.

They watched three men rob the restaurant, in the 7300 block of Ritchie Highway, then arrested them in the parking lot just after they walked out the front door. The men were carrying a loaded automatic handgun and a pillowcase containing stolen money.

Both officers received Silver Stars during an awards banquet last week at Michael's Eighth Avenue.

Old Mill graduate to appear on TV

Tiffany Thompson, 21, a 1989 graduate of Old Mill High School, will appear twice this week on the "Be a Star" television show on cable's National Network.

Ms. Thompson, a University of Maryland senior, sings country and country-flavored pop music. The show, in which she won a four-person competition, airs at 5 p.m. today .

She did not win in the show that will air at 5 p.m. Friday, said her mother, Bebe Thompson.

The shows were taped at Opryland in Nashville, Tenn. Ms. Thompson, who is making demonstration tapes with the hope of getting a recording contract, would like to make country singing a career, her mother said.

* Heritage Hill: Thieves took a radar detector valued at $100 from a 1987 Pontiac parked in the 300 block of Congressional Court Saturday or Sunday.

* Glen Burnie: Thieves stole the tires and rims from a 1990 Ford Escort parked in the lot of the Ritchie Jeep Eagle dealership in the 7200 block of Ritchie Highway Thursday night. The property was valued at $180.
