Corps of Engineers seeking comments on access ramp plan

The Army Corps of Engineers is looking for opinions on plans by Fort Meade to build a concrete access ramp in the Little Patuxent River near Route 198 and Route 32.

The base wants to build the ramp to move heavy machinery below the level of the bank to repair water intake valves that help supply drinking water to the post.

Workers would have to fill in 28 cubic yards below the high-water mark to build the 24-by-26-foot access ramp.

Doug Gorman, a spokesman for the Corps of Engineers, said the ramp is only for the machinery that will be used in the repairs and that the fill is to prevent erosion of the banks.

Man charged with assault

County police have charged a 36-year-old man with assault with intent to rape following the beating of an Odenton woman Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said a man grabbed the woman at 2:45 p.m. in a home in the 700 block of Chapelgate Drive, banged her head several times against the washing machine, bit her, then tried to rape her in front of her 4-year-old son.

Gary Bernhart Edwards, 36, also was charged with assault with intent to maim, a third-degree sex offense and two counts of assault and battery.

Driver charged with manslaughter

A 40-year-old Crofton man has been charged with auto manslaughter in connection with a collision in Crofton last month in which a motorist was hit while exchanging information with another driver after a minor accident.

Michael T. Bardowski of the 1800 block of Sharwood Place was charged yesterday. The Jan. 8 accident killed Gregg I. Getz, 28, of the 13000 block of Drake Drive in Rockville.

Deputy State's Attorney William D. Roessler said Mr. Getz was struck by Mr. Bardowski's car as it was heading west along Route 424 near Farrell Street. The victim was hit while he stood on Route 424 at 11:20 p.m., Mr. Roessler said.

Mr. Getz was pronounced dead at North Arundel Hospital at 1:21 a.m. Saturday.

Mr. Roessler said tests taken by police after the fatality indicated Mr. Bardowski had been drinking before the accident.
