Senior center Jeff Fogarty closed out his three-year hockey career at the U.S. Naval Academy in style yesterday at Dahlgren Hall by pacing the Midshipmen to a clean sweep of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA) honors.

Fogarty fired in five goals as Navy (15-4-2) ripped Delaware, 8-3, to win the ECHA Club League playoffs to go with its regular-season title.

"Jeff was unbelievable," said coach Jim Barry of the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Fogarty, who started at the Academy as a football player.

"He was named league MVP and deserved it with eight goals and two assists in the two playoff games."

Fogarty had a hat trick and assisted on two others in Saturday's 9-2 semifinal victory over the University of Maryland. It was the Midshipmen's fourth straight win over the Terps this season.

Delaware advanced to the tournament final with a 9-4 triumph over West Chester (Pa.).

Seniors Steve Roberto and Eric Fontaine and junior Rob Doherty

scored the other Navy goals in the title game.

Fogarty, Roberto, freshman goalie Sam DeCastro, and junior defenseman Billy Murphy were named to the ECHA All-Tournament Team.

Navy barely missed a return to the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament at North Dakota State University University in Fargo next month.

"We missed by a win or two that would have placed us higher in the national rankings, but it's still nice to win this way by repeating as league champions," said Barry.
