My Daughter

February 22, 1993|By Ali M. Zaghab

it's 9:30 and she fell

asleep in my lap

the beautiful locks leaving

their mark on her cheeks

pressed against my knee

her ear red and sweaty

and her nefertiti eyelashes

covering the pearl-shaped eyes

i gaze at her

and marvel at the beauty

sound asleep

i grapple for the blanket

from behind

laying it on the carpet

smoothing it gently

lest i wake Aminah up

i put her down asleep

with the lights glaring

and the TV murmuring

flat she sleeps with hands

stretched like a snow anger

breathing softly in the shadow

of the ticking clock

and the phone rings

quickly i grab it

and she stays asleep
