David Buckholtz

Glenelg High School

Hometown: Sykesville

Age: 18

His accomplishments: He is president of National Honor Society and is a member of the peer mediation program as well as co-chair of the legislative committee of the Howard County Association of Student Councils. He plays varsity basketball and baseball and is one of 10 seniors who holds a 4.0 grade point average.

He trained as a peer counselor in the DARE program and Youth Taking Action, a drug and alcohol awareness program. He was treasurer for the freshman and sophomore class committees.

Outside of school, he works as an intern to the assistant general manager of the Frederick Keys Baseball Program and played summer baseball for the Columbia Reds.

He is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar finalist, a state finalist in the Century III scholarship search and a semifinalist in Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Program. He is one of the 1,000 student finalists in the Josten Scholarship Program and also is a semifinalist in CitiBank Scholars Program.

His comments: Things are going faster. Every generation, things change. Now we're at a point that we have to deal with problems facing cultural awareness and find new solutions to race problems. If we don't take care of these problems now, they're going to get out of control.

His goals: "I'm still considering several majors, but I would like to work in a field that would improve the global community -- international law or new technology, for example." He's been accepted to Emory University and has applied to Harvard, Yale, Duke University, Rice University and Johns Hopkins University.
