N. Laurel man charged with indecent exposure

A 31-year-old North Laurel maintenance man has been charged with three counts of indecent exposure dating back to last summer, Howard County police said.

Walter Burke Jr., of the 9500 block of Sylvan Still Lane in North Laurel, was charged Thursday afternoon, police said.

Mr. Burke, a maintenance man for the Whiskey Bottom Apartments, was released on personal recognizance.

On three occasions between July 13 and Feb. 3, a man exposed himself to a 10-year-old girl, police said. Police say the last incident was at about 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the 9500 block of Sylvan Still Lane.

To discuss this crime and recent reports of burglaries in the area, the Howard County Police Department will meet with the community 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Laurel Woods Elementary School.

School forum focuses on ethnic diversity

"Focus: Diversity and World Cultures," a parent-student sharing night originally scheduled for last Tuesday, will be presented at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Hammond Middle School.

A joint effort of the Hammond Middle School PTA, administration and guidance department, this program is designed to help parents and students take a look at their attitudes and behavior toward members of various ethnic groups.

The role of ethnic diversity in today's world will be the topic of guest speaker Deborah Batiste of the Anti-Defamation League. Ms. Batiste's talk is sponsored by WUSA-TV, Channel 9 in Washington.

The program will begin with a brief PTA meeting from 7 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., with Ms. Batiste scheduled to speak from 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The evening will conclude with the serving of a variety of ethnic desserts in celebration of world cultures.

Hammond held a related event Friday when over 40 students, parents and visitors made presentations during World Cultures Day.

A field trip to Howard County District Court by 40 students will take place tomorrow.
