VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK

February 21, 1993

Betty Limstrom: of Westminster was honored recently by the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks as Seniors in Action 1992 Volunteer of the Year.

Mrs. Limstrom is volunteer secretary to the Seniors in Action board of directors. She served a year and a half as the group's first community coordinator.

Seniors in Action sponsors recreational activities for active Carroll County retirees.

Organization's comments: Seniors in Action President Grace Gladden said Mrs. Limstrom is "really the one who pulled it all together."

Ms. Gladden said, "She was the one who got me into the organization."

She said that in addition to serving as secretary to the board, Mrs. Limstrom also helps with a variety of projects. She serves as hostess for many of the group's trips, and she helps organize activities such as the planned fishing tournament. She also made the group's banner.

"She's a great recruiter to get people interested in our group," Ms. Gladden said.

Volunteer's comments: "You wear more than one hat," Mrs. Limstrom said.

She said having served as the group's first coordinator was good training for her current work. "I've been in on the ground floor, so to speak."

A retired teacher, Mrs. Limstrom said she enjoys planning group events and relishes the flexibility she has as a retiree and volunteer.

"I value my freedom so much," she said.

She said it's important for retirees who live in neighborhoods where most people work to have a way to meet people. Through Seniors in Action, she said, "I have met so many people who are very attractive, very outgoing, very full of life."

Background: Mrs. Limstrom, 64, has been married for 39 years to Paul Limstrom. The couple has two sons, Owen and Eric, and one grandson, Michael Thomas.

Mrs. Limstrom is a member of Seniors in Action's line dancing class. She also is active with the Western High School Class of 1946 reunion committee.
