Dec. jobless rate declines 0.3% in Howard Co.

The county's unemployment rate dropped from 4.7 percent in November to 4.4 percent in December, following a trend in the Baltimore region.

Howard's jobless rate was as high as 5.4 percent last summer.

The jobless rate in the Baltimore region declined from 7.3 percent to 7 percent. The state's unemployment rate fell from 6.5 percent to 6.3 percent.

Carroll and Queen Anne's counties were the only jurisdictions in the Baltimore region in which the jobless rate increased in December.

The number of people employed in Howard in December increased by 633, from 90,428 to 91,061. The state Department of Economic and Employment Development said much of the hiring activity during December came from retail businesses supplementing their work forces for the holiday season.

Although more people were finding jobs in December, the actual number of jobs statewide declined, the department reported.
