Johns Hopkins group keeps up a social pace

RUNNING

Although the group that runs informally every Wednesday evening at the Johns Hopkins University is not affiliated with any of the area's clubs, it is never short on running or camaraderie.

"Your hard-core runner doesn't need other runners," the group's Tim McDermott said. "But for the rest of us, Wednesdays are a social-type thing. We all get together and do the same thing we've been doing for years.

"A lot of the runners are Hopkins students or they teach at Hopkins. Word gets around that we run, and it becomes such a part of your week."

At 5:30 p.m., about 20 runners head out from the university's track on a six-mile, out-and-back course that takes them north on University Parkway.

"Some of them do 2 1/2 miles, but most of us go six," says Regina "Skeets" Lapetina, whose husband, Bo, formed the group more than a decade ago.

After they finish, the runners change clothes and head to P. J.'s Pub on Charles Street for refreshments and conversation.

"Somebody who gets there at 5:15 might do a mile, or if someone gets there at 5, they might get in 3 [miles] before the run. Some of the guys get there at 4:30 and do four or five miles," McDermott says. "But most of the people get there at 5:20.

"At 5:30 everyone heads out. If you want to catch them, don't get there at 5:32."

Fellowship is as important to the group as 7-minute miles.

McDermott says: "One Wednesday in November, it had been a && nice clear day, but in the afternoon the clouds started coming out and it started getting colder. I said to Skeets [Lapetina]: 'Why didn't you run during the day? It was clear all day long and you had all day to run. Why did you wait till 5:30?' "

"She said, 'Because I wanted to run with my friends.' "

Members of the Wednesday group include:
