Break out of the mid-winter blues with a few activities happening throughout the week in central Carroll County.

Thursday at 7 p.m., the Christian Preschool and Kindergarten will sponsor "Charlotte's Web."

The children's play will be performed by the Children's Theater Association Inc. in the Westminster High School auditorium.

Ticket prices for children ages 12 and under are $2. Adult prices are $4 per ticket.

The presentation of "Charlotte's Web" is a benefit to raise money for scholarships and special projects at the Christian Preschool.

The Christian Preschool and Kindergarten are at First United Presbyterian Church on Washington Road in Westminster.

It's a natural walk back in time this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., when the Bear Branch Nature Center offers its program, "Back to the Past."

You are invited to go on a nature hike with a lady from the 18th century who will share some interesting pieces of history.

Learn about the importance of plants and how they aided cooking and were used for medicine in the 1800s.

Stop by the two-story log cabin and participate in some turn-of-the-century cooking using a dutch oven.

Don't worry, you'll get to sample the goodies.

The Bear Branch Nature Center is off Route 97 at the Hashawha Environmental Resource Center in Westminster.

The fee for the event is $2 for Piney Run and Bear Branch members and $3 for nonmembers.

If you like music and you particularly like music performed by localmusicians, stop by the Frisco Family Pub this Saturday evening.

From 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., the Carroll County Arts Council will sponsor an Acoustic Musicians Night featuring local performers Michael O'Hara, Bill O'Hara, Mike Forton and the Miller Brothers.

The coffee house is open to all musicians interested in sharing their talents with the public.

Admission is $5. That includes soft drinks, coffee and snacks. A cash bar also will be available.

The Frisco Family Pub is handicap accessible.

Commercial Credit Corp. in Westminster has been conducting a canned food drive to benefit Carroll County Food Sunday.

The drive, which began Feb. 6, will continue through this Saturday.

All types of canned foods and nonperishable items will be accepted.

At the same time, Commercial Credit is sponsoring a corporation-wide customer appreciation sweepstakes.

Customers can register for special prizes when they bring in canned food.

Prizes include a new car, a trip to Disney World and a camcorder.

Commercial Credit is in the Westminster Shopping Center at Englar Road and Route 140.

Canned foods can be brought to the office weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays until 7 p.m.

All donated items will be distributed to the needy in Carroll County by Carroll County Food Sunday.

The Trinity Lutheran Church in Westminster will be conducting a 50-day spiritual adventure titled, "Survival Skills For Changing Times."

Beginning this Sunday and running throughout the Lenten season, the Rev.

Keith Hardy will present sermons and lead discussions on eight survival skills necessary for changing times.

Those skills include down-scaling, offloading stress, combining

resources, relating empathetically, guarding self-respect, learning our limits, appreciating what suffering teaches and endorsing the right leader.
