Woodlawn man is killed in smoky apartment fire

WOODLAWN -- A resident of the Town & County Apartments in the 6700 block of Townbrook Drive died early today when a fire, believed to have been caused by smoking in bed or a frayed electric wire, filled his apartment with smoke, police said.

Pronounced dead at the scene from apparent smoke inhalation was Edgar Alan Flaggs, 61, whose birthday is tomorrow.

The fire, reported at 12:28 a.m., broke out in a third-floor apartment at 6713 Townbrook Drive.

Shortly after firefighters entered the smoke-filled apartment, they found the victim in a bedroom.

The body was sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

The fire, which is under investigation, was confined to the victim's apartment.
