GARRETT COUNTY MCHENRY — Woman, 31, slain in dispute at bar

McHENRY -- A woman was shot to death Saturday night outside a Garrett County bar by the estranged husband of a friend of hers after she intervened in a confrontation between the couple, state police said.

The man then critically wounded himself, police said.

Police said George Herbert Beall Jr., 39, of Oakland, arrived at Razzberry's Sports Bar on U.S. 219 in McHenry shortly before midnight Saturday to speak to his estranged wife, Carolyn Joann Beall. Virginia Ellen Brady, 31, of Swanton, a friend of Ms. Beall's, got involved in the confrontation, police said.

According to police, Mr. Beall and Ms. Brady then stepped outside the bar, where Mr. Beall shot Ms. Brady in the head with a handgun, then shot himself in the head.

Ms. Brady was pronounced dead at the scene by James Wilburn, Garrett County deputy medical examiner.

Mr. Beall was taken to Garrett Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to Pittsburgh's Allegheny General Hospital, where he was listed yesterday in critical condition.

GLEN BURNIE

GLEN BURNIE -- Two men operating what appeared to be an unlicensed cab in Brooklyn raped a 23-year-old woman in a Glen Burnie industrial park early Saturday, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.

The woman was walking on Stoll Street near Patapsco Avenue about 1:30 a.m. when a man in a Bronco Blazer offered her a ride in exchange for money.

The woman got in, and the driver and a male passenger drove to a dark area of the Baymeadow Industrial Park. The park is near Ordnance Road and Route 10 near the U.S. Army General Services Depot.

Police said the woman drank alcoholic beverages, possibly laced with drugs, during the ride. Once in the parking lot, the men dragged the woman from the car, beat her and forced her to have sex with them, police said. They said the men took her pocketbook before driving off.

The woman walked one mile to a pay phone to call police.
