Harford Gymnastics squad competes in Maryland Cup

The Harford Gymnastics' boys team competed against 41 clubs from 11 states in the Maryland Gymnastics Cup at the University of Maryland Baltimore County last weekend.

In the Class V, 8-9 age group, Jon Wainwright finished third on pommel horse with 8.6 and third on parallel bars with 8.5.

Teammate Brian Cubbage, a Class V, 10-11 age-roup competitor, won the gold on floor exercise (9.4) and horizontal bar (9.5). He was second on vault (9.4), sixth on parallel bars (9.1) and second all-around with 55.3 points.

Patrick Curtis, competing in Class IV, 12-13 age group, placed second on floor exercise (9.05), fourth on rings with 8.45, fifth on pommel horse with 7.6 and fifth on parallel bars with 7.7.

Competing in the Class III, 12-13 age group, Jamie Geilenkirchen scored an 8.2 to place third on vault. Ron Weber placed fifth on parallel bars with 7.05, sixth on the horizontal bar with 7.4, and sixth on floor exercise with 8.55.

David Huber and Doug Dziwulski competed in the Class II, 14-15 age group.

The team is scheduled to compete this weekend in the South Atlantic Boys Interstate Championships in Annapolis.

Boys indoor soccer

* Under-14 -- The Greater Harford Soccer Club Express recorded two shutout victories at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.

The Express beat the '79 WHC Heat, 9-0. Goalkeeper Jamie List finished with 12 saves.

Goals were scored by Scott Plattenberg, Brian Shifflet, John Hollenbeck, Jared Gurrera and Jeff Boecher. Jason Reynolds, Gurrera and

Hollenbeck had assists.

The Express also earned a 6-0 win over Hickory. Scott Plattenberg led the offense with three goals, and List anchored a strong all-around defense with nine saves.

Shifflet, Brian Bienet and Steve Nearhood also scored, and assists were credited to Nearhood, Robert Pierno, Hollenbeck and Steve Plattenberg.

* The Edgewood Spirit defeated Abingdon, 12-1, behind three-goal performances from Eric Dannenfelser and Chris Kronner. Also scoring for the Spirit were Robert Gaines, Jeffrey Boecher, Justin Moe and Barry Hammen. Tim Smallwood scored for Abingdon.

Spirit assists were provided by Moe and Gaines. Steve Nearhood and Bruce Beegle were in goal for the Spirit.

* Under-12 -- The Greater Harford Strikers claimed a 12-5 win over Carroll Manor at the Maryland Sports Arena last week. Brian Kemper and Mike Costello had hat tricks. Luke Meissner (two goals), Chris Schneider, Brandon Lijewski, Tim Andon and Danny Taylor also scored for the Strikers.

Assists were provided by Costello, Schneider, Lijewski (two), and Andon, Taylor and Joey Meise (one). Goalkeeper Johnny Kunkle recorded 14 saves.

* The Greater Harford Lightning defeated Perry Hall, 6-3, in recent indoor soccer action at the Maryland Sports Arena behind two goals from Jason Hinson. Patrick Bukovsky, Eric Yankolonis and Jonathan Heatwole also scored for the Lightning.

Goalkeeper Brad Bonovich anchored the defense with 16 saves.

* The Genstar Booters overpowered St. Stephen's with a 7-1 victory Wednesday night at the Maryland Sports Arena. Scoring for the Booters were Justin Collins, Steve Adolph, Anthony Huczek, Alex Markiewicz,

Brent Haberkam, Ryan Nayden and Jared Dennis.

Assists were credited to Collins (two), Markiewicz, Christopher Swec, Huczek, Nayden and Dennis.

Giovanni Julian, Nayden and Dennis shared time in the goal for the Booters.

* The Forest Hill Force (4-1-0) defeated Essex, 9-3, behind a hat trick from center Scott North. Individual goals were scored by Eric Blom, Eric Duncan, Mike Duncan, Pat Jackson, Dave Michaels and Daniel Watts.

Blom also had three assists, and Duncan, Jackson, P. J. Kline, North and Watts each had one.

ALso playing well were Force defenders Pete Golumbek, Brent Irwin, Kline and Kevin Voelker at fullback, and Blom and Michaels in the goal.

* Under-10 -- In a tight matchup at the Maryland Sports Arena, the Spirit rallied to tie Churchville, 4-4. Craig Nearhood scored the last two goals for the Spirit, which trailed 3-1 going into the final quarter.

Jon Ryan scored the other two goals for the Spirit and Jon Hammel added an assist.

Churchville goals were scored by Justin Schlotterbeck (two), Gavin Still and Karl Johann. Alex Hutton and Matt Gaines were in goal for the Spirit, and Chris Smith and Adam Little were in goal for Churchville.

Girls basketball

Bel Air Recreation results from last weekend include:

* 9-10 -- Tarpons 12, Knights 6; Shooters 14, Skippers 10; Jaguars 12, Meteors 6; Koalas 10, Royals 10.

* 11-12 -- Gators 12, Warriors 9; Tornados 19, Eagles 14; Sables 10, Leopards 8; Marlins 8, Monarchs 6; Cardinals 13, Mustangs 12.

* 13-14 -- Hurricanes 19, Ravens 14; Sharks 22, Dolphins 20; Eagles 16, Warriors 12; Up-Chucks 33, Terrapins 16; Wildcats 18, Bulls 3.
