New York Yankees -- P John Habyan (5-6, 3.84 ERA, seven saves), a former Oriole, was awarded a $100,000 raise to $600,000, instead of his request for $830,000.

St. Louis Cardinals -- P Bob Tewksbury (16-5, 2.16 ERA) received a one-year deal worth $2,625,000, halfway between his request for $3.2 million and the club's offer of $2.05 million.

Seattle Mariners -- Agreed to terms with P John Cummings, P Reggie Harris, P Roger Salkeld, P Dave Wainhouse and 1B-C Greg Pirkl on one-year contracts.


Dallas Mavericks -- Announced that G Derek Harper (strained right hamstring) is expected to miss next week's road trip to New York and Cleveland and that F Terry Davis (back spasms) is will try to play Tuesday in New York.

Detroit Pistons -- Signed G Melvin Newbern to a contract for the remainder of the season.

LPGA -- Announced that the Mazda Japan Classic will now be called the Toray Japan Queens Cup. It will be Nov. 5-7 in western Japan.


New York Rangers -- Called up LW Craig Duncanson from AHL Binghamton.

St. Louis Blues -- Sent D Bret Hedican to IHL Peoria.

South Carolina Sharks (ECHL) -- Team, scheduled to begin play next season, announced it would back off the Sharks name because it already is registered by the San Jose Sharks of the NHL.
