February 14, 1993|By Diane Mullaly from the files of the Howard County Historical Society's library.

25 Years Ago (week of Feb. 4-10, 1968):

* The Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department requested that the Board of County Commissioners provide them with an additional $100,000 in addition to their $90,000 budgetary allotment for 1968-69. The additional funds were needed to purchase a

100-foot aerial ladder truck ($65,000) and to build an addition to the Main Street fire station. A new ladder truck was needed because of the recent proliferation of schools, apartments, and businesses in Ellicott City and Columbia.

* Two Howard County servicemen were reported killed in Vietnam this week, which made a total of four Vietnam-related fatalities during the first half of February. The four reported killed were: PFC Harry S. Fitez, Jr.; Specialist 4 Russell M. Amoss; Warrant Officer Gary W. Hanna, and Specialist Thomas W. Moore.
