RADFORD, Va. -- Don Burgess scored 24 points and Tom Gallaher added 21 -- on 10-for-10 shooting from the field -- to lead Radford (12-12, 6-5) to an 88-86 victory over UMBC (7-13, 4-7) in a Big South game last night.
With the Highlanders leading 86-84 with 18 seconds left, Radford's Brian Schmall missed the front end of a one-and-one. UMBC got the rebound, but a lob pass to Spencer Ferguson sailed out of bounds.
Doug Day then hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Radford an 88-84 lead. Brian Watkins, who led the Retrievers with 18 points, scored on a layup with two seconds left, but the Retrievers were out of timeouts.
UMBC point guard Dana Harris missed the last 10 minutes of the game after suffering a lacerated lip that required stitches. His replacement, Spencer Ferguson, scored 16.
Retrievers sophomore Kevin Bellinger, starting in place of injured forward Artie Walker (leg injury, had a career-high 13 points and 14 rebounds.
