State asks for meeting to ease Route 30 traffic

Officials from the Maryland State Highway Administration have asked to meet with representatives of the town of Hampstead to discuss how to ease traffic-flow problems on Route 30, Hampstead Mayor Clint Becker said yesterday.

He said, "The biggest problem is, flowing traffic through town is one goal, and crossing Main Street is another goal, and those two goals are mutually exclusive." No date for the meeting has been set, but Mayor Becker said he expects it will take place in late February or early March.

"This is a meeting that occurs every three or four years," he said.

Hampstead has an ongoing problem with congestion on Route 30. A proposed bypass around the area has been on the books since the 1950s, Mayor Becker said.

Regarding the bypass, he said, "I don't see anything happening soon."

* Lineboro: Lineboro firefighters were dispatched at 10:37 p.m. Tuesday to assist Pennsylvania fire companies with a chimney fire on Route 216.
