Tip from witness leads to auto theft arrests

A Baltimore man and a 15-year-old boy were arrested Tuesday and charged in the theft of a Ford Probe from Town Center.

Spencer Donnell Fields, 31, of the 4700 block of Delaware Ave. was charged with theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle, police said. He is being held in lieu of $10,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center, a correctional officer said. The 15-year-old, also from Baltimore, faces the same charges and is being held at a juvenile facility.

Police received a tip after a witness saw three males in the car pull into a park-and-ride lot in the 11200 block of Scaggsville Road. One got out, broke into a nearby gray Mitsubishi Diamante and drove off, police were told.

The witness then contacted police to report the tag number of the Ford, which had been stolen earlier in the day from the 11000 block of Little Patuxent Parkway, police said. A short time later, a state trooper spotted the car on routes 29 and 108, and, after a short chase, made the arrests.
