Simmons takes 4 golds for Harford Gymnastics

Angela Simmons, competing for the Harford Gymnastics training center, captured four gold medals in the Level 7 Optional division at the Maryland Classic Gymnastics Invitational Gaithersburg last Sunday.

The Level 7 Optional team of Simmons, Kristy Heron, Kelly Storck and Sherri Doyle scored a total of 99.0 to win the second-place team award.

Competing in the 9-11 age bracket, Simmons took gold medals on floor exercise (8.85), vaulting (8.75) and bars (8.65) to win first place in the all-around with 34.50 points.

In the 12-14 age group, Doyle took second on uneven bars with 8.80 and fifth in the all-around with 32.45. Heron won sixth place on uneven bars with 8.35.

In the Open Optional Senior division, Rebecca Robinson finished second in the all-around (37.70) behind 1992 Olympian Dominique Dawes of Gaithersburg. Robinson edged U.S. National Team member Martha Grubbs, who finished third all-around.

Robinson qualified for finals in all four events and finished with a second place on floor exercise with 9.55, third on vaulting with 9.575, fourth on beam with 9.35 and seventh on bars with 9.3.

In the Junior Open Optional division, 12-year-old Mandy Naworol won second place on vaulting with 9.2 and third place on floor with 9.175.

Rachel Smedley was Harford Gymnastic's top scorer in the Level 8 competition, where she finished sixth with 34.30. Smedley also took sixth place on vaulting with 8.4. Mandy Robinson placed third on uneven bars with 8.70.

Harford Gymnastic's Level 7 Compulsory team won first place in the Evergreen Invitational Meet at Rebounders Gym in Timonium on Jan. 25.

Boys indoor soccer

* Under-10 -- The Greater Harford Strikers scored two goals in the last two minutes of regulation, tying first-place Fallston, 7-7, in indoor soccer at the Maryland Sports Arena.

Mike Costello (five goals, one assist), Chris Schneider (two, four) and Luke Meissner (two assists) powered the Strikers on offense.

Defense was anchored by Matt Ward, Robby Singer, Danny Taylor and keeper John Kunkle.

The Greater Harford Lightning opened the second session at the arena with a 5-0 victory over White Marsh. Mike Santmyer (two), Johnny Maise, Mat Bland and Eric Yankolonis scored for the Lightning.

Derek Birkmare, Patrick Bukovski, John Heatwole, Jason Hinson, Ben Stutger and Stephen Piotrowski played defense. Keepers Brad Bonovich and Jason Kuhn combined for 18 saves.

* Under-12 -- The Forest Hill Force overcame Fallston, 1-0, Wednesday night at the Maryland Sports Arena.

Anthony Collurafici chased down a goalkeeper throw by Dave Michaels and scored the game-winner.

Eric Blom and Michaels shared time in the goal for the Force. Fullbacks Pete Golumbek, Kevin Voelker and Brent Irwin and halfback Mike Duncan anchored the defense.

Brent Haberkam scored a hat trick and Alex Markiewicz scored twice to lead the Genstar Booters to a 9-2 victory over Kingsville Wednesday night at the Maryland Sports Arena.

Also scoring were Alexander Ioannidis, Chris Johnson, Adam Limbach and Justin Collins. Assists were made by Steve Markiewicz and Anthony Huczek (two), Giovanni Julian, Justin Collins and Dan Magee with one. Jarod Dennis and Christopher Swec were in goal for the Booters.

On Saturday, the Booters rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat EDRECO, 3-2, at the Baltimore Arena. Haberkam, Huczek and Ryan Nayden scored. Steve Markiewicz and Huczek had assists.

The Greater Harford Rockets earned their first victory with a 3-2 triumph over the Outlaws in indoor soccer action at the Maryland Sports Arena.

Ryan Amberriti and Jaysen Newton scored for the Rockets, and Brian Lloyd scored and also had an assist. Steve Andon recorded 20 saves.

* Under-14 -- The Spirit took a 2-0 halftime lead over Edgewood and went on to record a 6-0 win and remain undefeated (2-0) this session.

Justin Moe (two), Chris Kronner, Trevor Mullins (assisted by Kronner), Jeff Boescher and Steve Nearhood also scored for the Spirit.

Craig Hammel, Nearhood and Boescher played defense for the Spirit. Moe and Robert Gaines shared time in the goal. Jonathan Byrnes made several key saves in goal for Edgewood.

Girls indoor soccer

The Bel Air girls travel team defeated Lutherville-Timonium, 2-1, last Sunday at the Perring Athletic Club.

Keri Kinnear and Monica Janowitz scored for Bel Air. Angela Munro and Katie Campbell were credited with outstanding play in goal for Bel Air.

Girls basketball

The Fallston girls travel basketball team moved into first place in the Loch Raven Recreation Council travel league with a 30-27 win over previously undefeated Perry Hall last weekend.

Fallston led by four at the half, but Perry Hall took a 22-21 lead late in the third quarter. Fallston rallied for a 29-24 lead late until a Perry Hall player made a three-pointer to close the gap to 29-27.

Fallston's Anne West made a free throw with six seconds left to secure the win.

Karen Tiedemann led Fallston with nine points, followed by Stephanie Colevas (eight), Bethany Cannon (six), Jenny Cook, Kristen Gill and Tonya Worthington (two). Danielle Konschak, playing with an injured hand, made several key defensive plays.
