Hank Reinhardt of Westminster, Scoutmaster and past...

VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK

February 07, 1993

Hank Reinhardt of Westminster, Scoutmaster and past district chairman of the Carroll County Boy Scouts of America, was presented Jan. 28 with the Silver Beaver award, the highest honor the Baltimore-area Boy Scout Council can bestow on a volunteer.

Mr. Reinhardt, scoutmaster of Troop 420 in Westminster, has served the Boy Scouts since the early 1970s and was elected district chairman three times. He has been a Scoutmaster since 1978 and has also served as unit commissioner, overseeing several Scout units.

In January, Mr. Reinhardt chaired the Klondike Derby, a winter sports event that attracted 1,350 participants. As swimming merit badge counselor, he runs the swimming program at Western Maryland College for county Scouts.

Organization's comments: Todd Walter, district executive for the Carroll County Scout District, said the award was presented to Mr. Reinhardt "for his long service to Scouting in Carroll County."

"Completely everything he does is for the boys," Mr. Walter said.

Mr. Reinhardt helps with many projects, Mr. Walter said, but he doesn't tell everyone about the effort he has put in. "He's so modest."

Volunteer's comments: "I started Scouting when my oldest son joined," Mr. Reinhardt said.

He said he spends an average of three nights a week on Scouting activities, plus one weekend a month on a camping trip.

"I enjoy it, especially the camping. . . . I've always liked the outdoors," he said. He works indoors, he said, but Scouting gives him an opportunity to be outdoors "with a reason."

He said, "I help out at the district because I realize somebody has to."

Mr. Reinhardt praises his wife, Marilyn, for allowing him the time to be involved in Scouting and for helping with transportation and with projects, such as Christmas tree sales.

"It's her support that lets me do this," he said.

Background: Mr. Reinhardt, 59, is an accountant. He and his wife have four sons: Hank Jr., 28; Mel, 27; Jerry, 25; and Tom, 23.
