Name: Betty Wilkes of Severna Park.

Volunteer Work: Ms. Wilkes has been president of the North Arundel Hospital Auxiliary for the past four years and a volunteer for the auxiliary for the past eight.

As president, she oversees and coordinates the work of the auxiliary with approximately 200 active members and some 200 additional people working in support areas for fund-raisers throughout the year.

The auxiliary helps in all departments of the hospital, from the gift shop and admitting areas to the emergency room and the medical-surgical floors.

Ms. Wilkes says she trys to "keep things running smoothly" as she works with approximately eight chairpersons, each responsible for various departments and activities for volunteers.

She became a volunteer at the hospital at the suggestion of a friend. But this is not the first time Ms. Wilkes has performed volunteer work.

While raising her children, she was involved in a variety of school and church activities.

In addition to her responsibilities as president, Ms. Wilkes continues to work in the hospital's gift shop and mail department, as well as take on special projects. She currently is co-chairing the hospital's fashion show, scheduled for March 19.In addition to her work at the hospital, Ms. Wilkes is the legislative chairperson for the Maryland Association of Hospital Auxiliaries, where she directs and coordinates the association's annual conference in Annapolis, scheduling speakers and assisting with the agenda on health care issues that affect auxiliaries throughout the state.

Ms. Wilkes plans to continue her volunteer work at the hospital and invites anyone interested in joining the auxiliary -- men and women -- to call her office at 787-4678 or stop by the gift shop to pick up a volunteer membership form.

"There are never enough volunteers. We can always use more," she says.

Volunteer's comment: Looking back at her service as president of the auxiliary for the past four years, Ms. Wilkes says, "I think overall, save for a few ups and downs, it's been a great success for me."

The volunteer work has "been a very good experience for me. The hospital makes us [volunteers] feel good and shows us appreciation."
