Mount Airy to consider annexation

The Mount Airy Town Council will have a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. May 3 on an annexation request from Doub's Farm.

The town's Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended that the Town Council deny the request to annex 126 acres east and west of Watersville Road at the town's eastern boundary.

Commissioners rejected the annexation request in October. But when the request went to the Town Council, the applicant presented the board with a statement in support of the annexation. The council referred it back to the planning commission for review.

By annexing the property, the applicant has said the town boundary would be closer to the proposed Gillis Falls reservoir.

Town staffers noted, however, that use of the reservoir has been delayed by environmental concerns for at least 10 years. The town could annex the property whenever the reservoir is built.

In addition, the planning commission rejected the request because the property can not be interconnected with the town's street system and would require significant grading of steep slopes near a branch of the Patapsco River.
