Lothian man killed in crash at Route 2 stop

A 30-year-old man was killed yesterday morning when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with an 18-wheel truck.

Mark Andrew Greenwell, of the first block of Old Solomons Island Road in Lothian, was pronounced dead at Anne Arundel Medical Center shortly after being transported from the scene of the 4 a.m. accident at Routes 2 and 408. The crash shut down that intersection for more than three hours.

County police spokeswoman Terry Robey said Mr. Greenwell, who was driving a Dodge pickup truck north on Route 2, went through a stop sign and collided with the tractor trailer, which was passing through the intersection.

The truck driver, Ray Edgar Gaskill Jr., 34, of the 3400 block of Lisa Circle in Waldorf, was not injured. A tractor trailer overturned on Route 50 near the Route 424 intersection yesterday, snarling traffic for almost seven hours.

State police in Annapolis said the driver lost control when he tried to move into a lane occupied by another truck at about 2:30 a.m.

The trailer swerved into a guardrail, ran over a small embankment and overturned, blocking one lane and spilling cartons of orange juice on the highway. No one was injured.

Only one lane on eastbound U.S. 50 was allowed to pass the accident scene until the truck could be pushed off the road at 6 a.m. Several lanes on the highway were again shut down from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. so crews could remove the truck.
