Fire damages apartment

A residential sprinkler system helped extinguish a fire that caused $5,000 damage to a ground-floor apartment in Elkridge yesterday.

The fire broke out about 8 a.m. in a bedroom in the Montgomery Run Apartments in the 8400 block of Cotoneaster Road, said Battalion Chief Donald R. Howell of the Howard County Fire and Rescue Services.

When 20 firefighters from Elkridge, Banneker, Long Reach and River Park stations responded, they discovered that the sprinkler system had contained the fire, he said.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating.
