League to meet in Westminster CENTRAL -- Union Mills * Westminster * Sandymount * Finksburg

February 03, 1993

Westminster will play host for the first time to an estimated 250 delegates and guests attending the Maryland Municipal League's annual legislative conference in October 1994.

The league's 29-member board of directors chose Westminster last week over competing applications from Oakland and Easton.

No estimate of the potential dollar flow to Westminster was available from the league.

But Executive Director Jon C. Burrell said delegates will occupy approximately 150 motel rooms at $65 to $75 a day for the 2- or 2 1/2 -day stay and will spend perhaps $25 a day each on meals.

Westminster city government will spend an estimated $5,000 to $6,000 on conference expenses.

"I think it will be money well spent," said Councilman Kenneth A. Yowan, who sparked the effort to bring the conference to Westminster. "Obviously, [delegates and guests] are going to spend a lot more than that, but that's not the point. It's the long-term benefit."

Mr. Yowan said the conference should bring Westminster good publicity, in addition to introducing the city to leaders from around the state.
