Dump truck hits guardrail; driver injured

A Baltimore man was slightly injured yesterday afternoon when his dump truck ran through a guardrail in Ellicott City and rolled down an embankment, dumping a small amount of diesel fuel into a stream, said a spokesman for the county's fire and rescue services.

Anthony Ballard, 40, of the 200 block of Bishop Ave. was taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries after the 1:06 p.m. accident on Route 29 near Frederick and Toll House roads, said Battalion Chief Donald R. Howell, spokesman for the Howard County Fire and Rescue Services.

Mr. Ballard was driving north on Route 29 when "he made a radical right turn," crashed into a guardrail and rolled down an embankment, Chief Howell said.

The truck, owned by Waste Management Inc., rested on its side on the hill, Chief Howell said.

About 20 gallons of diesel fuel and several tons of construction debris from the truck was dumped into the stream following the single-vehicle accident, Chief Howell said.

The fuel leak had "minimal environmental impact," he said.

Emergency hazardous material workers arrived to contain and clean up the spill, he said.

State highway workers repaired the guardrail, he said.
