Frederick man accused of theft at Cranberry Mall

A 31-year-old Frederick man who is accused of stealing a stereo set from the Montgomery Ward store at Cranberry Mall was being held on $25,000 bail Monday by a Carroll County District Court judge.

Kelvin Lin Jones of South Market Street has been charged with theft, assault, battery and possession of cocaine.

Police said Mr. Jones was observed on a security camera monitor as he entered the electronics section, picked up a Pioneer stereo unit valued at $680 and walked out the door to the parking lot.

A guard followed the suspect from the store, and the guard was struck with the stereo on his leg. The guard captured the suspect and held him until Westminster police arrived.

Police said when they searched the man they found a plastic bag containing white powder believed to be cocaine.

Two hurt in crash caused by deer

A deer that jumped in front of a motorist caused a head-on collision on Route 27 near Hampstead-Mexico Road Monday night.

Police said Karen Bowles, 41, was driving north on Route 27 when a deer jumped out in front of her Isuzu Trooper about 6:45 p.m.

Ms. Bowles told officers that she couldn't avoid the deer, struck it and then slid into the southbound lane of traffic. Her car hit a Toyota Corolla, driven by 28-year-old Lynne Smiley, said state police Tfc. George Preger.

"She [Ms. Bowles] reported to me later at the hospital that the deer was under her wheel and she couldn't steer," said Trooper Preger. "The [driver of the] car in front of Ms. Smiley said a deer ran in front of her as well, so there must have been a couple of them."

Both women were taken to Carroll County General Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
