Story times, events, displays slated at area libraries

Events at West County libraries include displays and programs honoring women and African-Americans as part of Black History Month in February.

Master storyteller Len Cabral, who specializes in generations-old folk tales from Africa and the West Indies, will be at the Provinces branch library Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m.

Admission is free, although contributions of nonperishable goods for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank will be accepted.

Also next month, the Crofton library will feature African-American artifacts and sculptures.

Four West County libraries will offer storytelling in February and March:

* Crofton: Thursdays, Feb. 11 to March 18, 2-year-olds will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; children between 3 and 6 years old will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and a story time for children, ages 2 to 6, and parents will be held Wednesdays, Feb. 10 through March 17, and March 31 from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The program includes stories, songs and activities.

* Maryland City: Story time for young children will be held Wednesdays from Feb. 3 to March 17 at 10:30 a.m.

* Odenton: Children between 2 and 6 years old will meet Tuesdays, Feb. 9 to March 17 at 7 p.m. and Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

* Provinces: Children ages 2 to 6 will meet Wednesdays at 10 a.m and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

The branch will be closed Feb. 22-27 because new carpet is being installed. It will reopen Monday, March 1, at 1 p.m.

No registration is needed to participate in the story times. Parents or caretakers must accompany children who are 3 and under.

POLICE LOG

* Gambrills: Burglars broke into a home in the 1300 block of Defense Highway Monday and took an undetermined amount of money.

* Hanover: Burglars broke into a home in the 7500 block of Ridge Road Friday and took $1,700.
