DINING OUT THE CRITIC'S REPORT

Panda Chinese Gourmet, 6080 Falls Road at Lake Avenue, (410) 377-4228. What the Panda Chinese Gourmet isn't is a gourmet Chinese restaurant. The food just isn't as good as it could be. And that's a shame, considering the comfortable, pretty setting and the really lovely staff. Of what we tried I can recommend with only moderate enthusiasm the hot and sour soup, pan-fried dumplings and a "sizzling dish" that combines meat, seafood and vegetables. This is a good place to know about, though, if you're in the neighborhood and convenience means more to you than great Asian cuisine. $$ -- moderate. (Last reviewed 1/93.)

Mick's, Towson Commons, Towson, (410) 825-0071. Mick's has a youth-oriented menu and a child-friendly decor. That's its strength: It caters to families but manages to appeal to singles a little later in the evening. The food is moderately priced, with lots of burgers, grilled dishes, pastas and comfort dishes like meatloaf. All these, though, pale in comparison with the desserts, which speak to the fantasies of every child and the child in every adult. I would advise skipping the fried green tomatoes, the grilled swordfish, the Thai shrimp pasta and go for something like a Heath Bar ice cream pie, peach cobbler or one of the cream pies du jour. $$ -- moderate.
