Biographer of Malcolm X to talk at WMC

Benjamin Karim, a longtime associate of Malcolm X during the years of his greatest popularity and the author of a new biography and memoir of the outspoken Nation of Islam leader, will speak at Western Maryland College on Feb. 16 as part of the college's observance of African-American History Month.

Mr. Karim, who spent eight years working with Malcolm X in the Black Muslim movement, will discuss his experiences in a lecture at 7:30 p.m. in McDaniel Lounge. The event, like all others scheduled for the monthlong celebration, is free and open to the public.

Other Western Maryland activities planned for African-American History Month and open to the public include:

* African-American Appreciation Day, sponsored by the WMC Black Student Union, Monday, Feb. 1, 11:30 a.m., Decker College Center Pub;

* Gospel Jubilee, featuring choirs from the Gospel Tabernacle, Mount Pleasant, Southern Baptist and Union Street Methodist churches, Saturday, Feb. 6, 6 p.m., Baker Memorial Chapel;

* Dr. James Laue, professor of Sociology who teaches conflict resolution at George Mason University, speaking on "Direct Action and Desegregation," Thursday, Feb. 11, 8 p.m., Decker Auditorium;

* Screening of the film "Brown Eyes, Blue Eyes," followed by discussion, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 7:30 p.m., Decker College Center Forum;

* Jaasu Ballet Traditional African Dance Ensemble, Thursday, Feb. 18, 7:30 p.m., Decker College Center Forum;

* WMC Black Student Union Open House, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m., McDaniel Hall Club Room;

* Workshop on healing racism, Wednesday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m., McDaniel Lounge;

* Issues discussion and brown bag luncheon, Thursday, Feb. 25, noon, President's Dining Room, Decker College Center;

* Drama Festival '93, Sunday, Feb. 28, 6 p.m., Baker Memorial Chapel.
