'Spinny' Johnson to conduct program on drug abuse 0) prevention

Former Harlem Globetrotter Spencer "Spinny" Johnson, will perform from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Forest Ridge Elementary School Recreation Center.

The audience-participation program, which emphasizes drug abuse awareness and prevention, is sponsored by the county Recreation and Parks Department. Tickets are $2 per person and $5 per family, (limit six per family). Children ages 5 and over are welcome; an adult must accompany children under age 13.

Tickets are available at the department's main office at 330 Ridge Road in Ellicott City from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Pair charged with drug possession

An 18-year-old Savage man and another teen-ager have been charged with possession of crack cocaine after police interrupted an alleged drug deal in Savage, Howard County police said.

Samuel Samson Payne, of the 8500 block of Storch Woods Drive, was charged with possession of crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute, and using a minor to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, police said. He's being held in lieu of $5,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center, a correctional officer said.

The 17-year-old, also of the 8500 block of Storch Woods Drive, was charged as a juvenile with possession of cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, police said. His name was withheld because of his age.

Mr. Payne and the other teen-ager were arrested about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 8500 block of Storch Woods Drive when members of the police department's street drug section allegedly observed a drug deal, police said.

Officers recovered one-quarter ounce of crack cocaine and about $500 cash, police said.

Officers were in the area to investigate complaints of drug activity, police said.


* North Laurel: 9200 block of Livery Lane: Someone kicked in a door between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and stole a gun and jewelry.

9200 block of Livery Lane: Someone kicked in a door between 7 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. Jan. 15, and stole electronic equipment, guns and jewelry.

Route 1 and Whiskey Bottom Road: Marco Miguel Robertson, 18, of Laurel, was arrested after a traffic stop and charged with theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He allegedly was driving a 1990 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen in Greenbelt.
