Zoning change opponents to voice concerns

West County civic groups opposed to a request for commercial zoning on three acres of land on Route 3 in Gambrills are to voice their objections this morning at a hearing in Annapolis.

Developer Thomas Baldwin plans to sell the land, currently zoned for residential use, to Jones Intercable for a new headquarters, but the company won't buy it unless it has commercial zoning.

Jones is located on property adjacent to Mr. Baldwin's land near St. Stephen's Church Road. The company plans to rent that building if the rezoning request is approved, Mr. Baldwin said.

Several community associations, including those in in Crofton and Gambrills, oppose the rezoning request.

The public hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the county council chambers at the Arundel Center.

* Crofton: Burglars broke into a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder that was parked in the 1600 block of Wilkshire Drive Tuesday and took a purse and money. The value of the property was unknown.
